After at least a year or two of seeing all the beautiful PenGems on Instagram, I was gifted one by my friend Rachel.
Maybe you have never heard of PenGems before, or maybe you have just been admiring them from afar. Either way, I wanted to share my thoughts on the popular writing tool so you can decide for yourself if they are worth the spurge.
I posted awhile back sharing all the Simply Gilded Washi Tape that I have purchased. So I thought that it would be fun to do another post with the PenGems I’ve collected.
As of right now, I’ve only made one purchase. But I happened to make that purchase during a Buy One Get One Free Sale (which is apparently unheard of for PenGems). I have eight pens that I want to show you today and I will add any others that I receive in the future.
What Are PenGems?
If you are unfamiliar with PenGems, they are a specialty pen that has gems in the barrel of the pen, and a large gem on the top. And as you will see with the Lightshow pen, some also have other special characteristics besides just these jewels.

The Pens (lots of pictures)
This is Lightdance. Isn’t it pretty? I love it so much! This was my first PenGem, that was gifted to me by my friend, Rachel. It’s hard to not get hooked when this is how you start out!
Mischief – I love the black, pink, and clear jewels inside!
Aspen – I wanted to make sure I had a neutral color, and it was between this one and all black. I decided to go with Aspen since I was also getting Mischief, which is mostly black anyway. I love the diamond look of the gems!
Caribbean Blue – Blues are always a necessity for me. And it’s even better when its got some teal tones in there too.
Pistachio – I almost didn’t get this one (but hey, that’s what happens when you are $3 away from free shipping, you add something on). But I’m so glad I did. The mint green is beautiful!
Darling – because of course I had to get a purple!
Aloha has a bright red-coral barrel with dark coral gems!
Havana Cabana – Medium pink gems with a metallic dark pink barrel.
Are they worth it?
I’ve always been a pen addict. I’m also a pen snob. It is important that I like writing with a pen. Being pretty just isn’t enough for me.
It’s no surprise that PenGems have the beautiful thing down. Their name says it all. Besides having sparkly gems inside, they also come in a huge variety of colors and styles. And there are new styles being released every few weeks.
But the best part is that they are also very smooth to write with.
Okay, maybe the gems are the best part. But I love how smooth they write! Especially for being a ball point pen (I usually gravitate towards gel pens).
They are also heavy pens! I love pens that just feel like they are high quality, and the weight of these shows that they are made well.
Plus, they are thin enough that they fit into even the smallest pen loop that I have, my Filofax wallet. I have only a couple other pens that are able to do that!
Another perk of PenGems is that they are refillable. There is nothing worse than having a pen you love that runs out and has no way to get a refill for it. That would be especially true when you are spending $10+ for a specialty pen. But no worries about that here. Not only are they refillable, but each pen comes with a refill.
There are very few ball point pens that I will use on a regular basis. If you saw my post about my favorite planner pens you will see how few ball point pens are on that list (I can only think of one off the top of my head). Even with as pretty as they are, there’s no way I would have bought more PenGems if I didn’t like the way they write.
Even if you don’t become a collector, I definitely think that PenGems are one of those planned splurges that it is worth to try at least once. They are gorgeous to look at, and write beautifully.
